While there is some conflicting information out there on when to wear a back brace, there are a few general rules of thumb that you can follow to ensure you are getting the most out of your back brace. Some sources state to wear the brace as little as possible, while others state there is little harm is wearing it throughout the day. The best thing you can do in this situation is to listen to the advice of your healthcare provider. Your doctor will be able to help you get a plan in place so you can get the most out of your back brace.
Common times to wear a back brace
While lifting heavy objects — If you frequently lift heavy loads, then you should wear a back brace to assist in correct posture and form. Remember to bend from your knees and not your back so that your legs do most of the work. Lifting with your back can cause pain and injury.
While sitting for long periods of time — You should wear your back brace if you are sedentary for long hours; this will help you maintain correct posture and result in less tension in your lower back. While we sit, gravity tends to pull our shoulders forward and this unnatural position for an extended amount of time can ultimately cause spine deformity and severe pain. While wearing a back brace, your spine will remain properly aligned while you remain sitting or even standing for long periods of time.
While recovering from injury or surgery — If you’ve been injured, it is best to consult your doctor about when to wear a back brace. If you are recovering from surgery, the doctor will most likely provide you this information in a discharge plan. Make sure to follow your doctor’s instructions; your physician may require that your wear the brace 24 hours for a while, or may simply require you to wear the brace when you feel you need it.
Don’t over-use your brace
Remember that a back brace is meant to supplement the muscles of your back and provide support and comfort when needed. Be cautious of becoming dependent on a back brace or over using it. Your back brace could become a detriment if worn too often or against the advice of your doctor.
